The International Festival of the Azores (FIA) returns to Faial, from 7 to 14 September, with a 16th edition dedicated to the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and his relationship with the island, and pianist Nelson Freire.
6:00 p.m. – Opening of the exhibition and festival | Auditorium of the Public Library and Regional Archive João José da Graça.

10:30 a.m. – Trekking and observation of endemic plants in Faial island, by a local biologist (to be designated).

Programme dedicated to the piano 4-hands repertoire with works by Schubert, Grieg and Dvorack.
10:30 a.m. – Observation of the biodiversity of the island with a reforestation action by the Regional Secretary for the Environment of the Azores.
7 p.m. – Constantin Sandu | Teatro Faialense.
Constantin Sandu developed under the influence of his Romanian masters – Sonia Ratescu, Constantin Nitu and, later, Constantin Ionescu-Vovu at the Higher Conservatory of Music “C. Porumbescu” of Bucharest – and of several other outstanding individualities – Sequeira Costa, Dimitri Bashkirov, Helena Sá e Costa and Tânia Achot. This recital will be dedicated to the composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and his contemporaries.
10.00 – 13.00 – Piano Masterclass by Leonardo Hildsdorf for students of Conservatório Regional do Faial.
10.30 a.m. – Walking tour of the island with a local guide (to be arranged).

This concert will be dedicated to the Azorean composer Francisco Lacerda and his contemporaries Debussy and Duparc.

Villa Lobos is one of the most interpreted composers in the guitar repertoire. He created new technical resources and demanding revolutionary interpretative concepts that contributed to the musical development of the instrument. Works of Villa-Lobos.

Works by Villa Lobos, Schubert and Beethoven
This recital will use the famous Romberg cello built in the 18th century. This instrument was part of the orchestra of the Prince Elector Archbishop of Cologne and was presented to Beethoven in 1790. This instrument valued at 3 million euros is on exclusive loan to the cellist Pavel Gomziakov.

In anticipation of the celebrations of Scriabin’s 150th birthday, which will take place in 2022, this recital will be dedicated to Russian music. Given the historical connections of Pico wines with the court of the Czars, at the end of the recital there will be a wine tasting of wines from the region.
