Yes, Faial is about trail running, and there are events beyond the classics of Azores Trail Run. Ribeirinha Ativa / Corpus Seven organizes the Ribeirinha Extreme Trail. You can either participate in the 15 km trail run race, or just take it slower and do an 8 km hike. Sign up here until December 8.
