Does trail running in Faial mean that you must run up and around the Caldeira? No, the urban trail in Matriz is a city trail. But on a volcanic island it does include a volcano. The Matriz urban trail is already organized for the 9th time as part of the celebrations of the Parish Day of Matriz.
Starting from the Largo Duque D’Ávila e Bolama you will pass by the Clock Tower, all the way up the hill, around Monte Carneiro (the obligatory volcano), down to the city through the Colónia Alemã and along the Avenida back to the starting point. For those who do not want to run 6,5km they can take it more quiet on the 3,5km walking trail on a shortened route, leaving out the volcano.
