“The sea is what connects usā€¦”, “Barbarians from the south”, “Nanban-jin” or simply “Namban”, was the nickname that the Europeans received from the Japanese. The Kingdom of Portugal initiated commercial contacts with Japan from 1543 onwards and a cultural exchange started. Exquisite and beautiful, the exhibits are representative of Namban art, which developed in Japan following the arrival of the Portuguese in 1543, constituting one of the first known examples of the westernisation of Asia. The Namban archives belong to the collector VergĆlio Schneider, dating from the Momoyama period, from 1568 to 1603.

From 9 April to 26 June in the Museum of Horta, free access from Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
