The Cineclube do Faial presents the next movie cycle dedicated to women in the 21st century. The strong patriarchal culture, the bonds of tradition and religion, as well as social and political tensions are some of the challenges that women continue to face today, in societies in the process of modernization. The intention of the movie cycle “The Malcriadas” is to give voice to the Women who rise up, and to their continuous struggle for emancipation.

  • Mustang (2015), by Turkish-French director Deniz Gamze Ergüven. The film tells the story of five sisters from a lost village in Turkey who are punished after playing with boys, an act considered scandalous by the Muslim religion and which will have unexpected consequences. It premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, had an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film, and won the European Parliament LUX Prize.
  • The Worst Person in the World (2021) by Norwegian Joachim Trier, an acid comedy about love. With a certain serious lightness, the director follows a young woman into the bowels of her soul, including the most radical choices in her love life. The film was awarded at the Cannes Film Festival 2021 (Renate Reinsve received the Best Actress award) and has two nominations for the Oscars 2022 (Best Foreign Film and Best Original Screenplay).
  • Woman at War (2018), an Icelandic-Ukrainian drama-comedy written, produced and directed by Benedikt Erlingsson. The film tells the story of Halla, a 50-year-old environmentalist from Reykjavik, who decides to take on the aluminium industry in a solitary act of justice for the sake of defending the environment and mitigating global warming. A soundtrack accompanies the narrative in the background, almost like a Greek chorus of the drama. The film premiered at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival and won the European Parliament LUX Prize the same year.

Tickets are available at the box office or at the Mercado Municipal.
