Faial commemorates 50 years of the Carnation Revolution, the Freedom Day with a series of events. There will be concerts, workshops, speeches, kids activities and of course free sardines for everybody. The Carnation Revolution is a pivotal moment in Portugal’s history, occurred on April 25, 1974, marking the end of the Estado Novo regime. This military coup, led by the Armed Forces Movement (MFA), was a watershed event that catalyzed significant social, economic, and political transformations in Portugal and its colonies.

The revolution was named for the peaceful manner in which it unfolded, with almost no shots fired. It’s famously remembered for the image of carnations being placed in the muzzles of rifles and on soldiers’ uniforms as a symbol of the peaceful resistance. The movement not only overthrew the authoritarian government but also initiated the Portuguese transition to democracy and the decolonization of Portuguese colonies in Africa and Asia.

The Carnation Revolution stands out as a unique event where military action coupled with widespread civil support led to a bloodless transition of power. It is celebrated annually on Freedom Day, a testament to the enduring legacy of this peaceful uprising that restored democracy and freedom to the Portuguese people.

This revolution is not only a significant historical event but also a powerful example of non-violent resistance and the quest for democratic governance. Its impact resonates in the annals of history as a reminder of the strength of united civilian and military efforts to achieve common goals of liberty and justice.
