The Morro de Castelo Branco, is a rock which remained after an volcanic eruption that happened about 30 000 years ago. It got its name “White Castle” from the white rock it consists of. Depending on where you are sitting on the airplane when arriving in Faial, you might get a view on it just seconds before touchdown.

How to get to the Morro de Castelo Branco

Just take the regional road from Horta towards Capelinhos, after about 15 minutes you will reach Castelo Branco. About 1 kilometre after the airport a sign will direct you to the left onto a small, paved road. After a couple of turns you will reach the parking lot.

What to do at the Morro de Castelo Branco

Just enjoy the view, the white rock, the rich bird life. Towards the west you can see the cost towards Varadouro, to the east Pico.

You can take the short trail which leads you up the fields towards the regional road and back. It can be done easily in 1h 30 minutes and does not any skills.
